I'll reword the question - what is the purpose of pointing at the similarities?
To show that there are similarities, possibly.
Stop being so sensitive on the subject of Israel. Just pointing at a similarity between two situations shouldn't get you this worked up.
1)Without being able to read the minds of Turkish govt leaders, I'd be generous and say (as I did in my last post) that they were acting in defense of the rights of ethnic Turkish citizens of Cyprus at the time of the invasion (potentially endangered by an imminent Greek coup on Cyprus).
Acceptable answer, although very vague, probably to make up for the lack of info. "Potentially endangered"? Is that what you call the very real killings that were going on?
Military junta came to power in Greece. They had the idea to annex Cyprus to Greece. An ethnic cleansing operation started in the island against the Turkish minority. Turkish military came in, drew the line of what is present day "Northern Cyprus", and since then, the Green Line is being protected by UN as well as Greek soldiers in the south and Turkish soldiers in the north.
(2) Oh, we're going to say that merely depriving them of their homes isn't oppression
In light of what you now know about the history of Cyprus after having read the paragraph above, you should now know that people of both sides have lost their homes when they were forced to flee into their respective regions.
When Turks and Greeks were living together peacefully, nobody lost their homes. Then Greece got the idea that it would be cool to kill or otherwise get rid of the Turkish minority of Cyprus so that the island could be annexed to Greece. Turkish military came into Cyprus after ethnic cleansing of the Turks started, not before. It is a pity that Cypriots of both sides lost their homes as a result, but your calling the situation "Turks oppressing Greeks", especially "Turks CURRENTLY oppressing Greeks" is either very misinformed or remarkably dishonest.
>>>3) Why would Greeks withdraw their (opposition?) to Turkey joining the EU if Turkey was oppressing them?<<< I don't know, but its irrelevant
Isn't it sad that you choose to ignore the facts when they contradict with your version of the world?
The answer is simple and it is very relevant - Turks are not "currently oppressing" Greeks. That is a figment of your imagination.
In fact, if you took to reading the papers these days, you would find out that Turkish and Greek residents of Cyprus are working on an agreement to reunite the island.
I would be interested to talk about historic struggles between Turks and Greeks, including who oppressed and aggressed whom at various times, if you think you know enough on the subject to sustain a conversation.
However, your statement "Turks are currently oppressing Greeks" is demonstrably false.
>>>You also need to explain how Turkey is "currently" oppressing the Kurds. You must have forgotten to refer to it in this post. <<< No, I decided I don't need to refer to the Kurds at all
Did you just forget all about how a conversation works?
You asserted that "Turkey is currently oppressing the Kurds". I challenged you on that, and asked you to elaborate. You cannot very well decide you don't need to refer to it, my dear Brumar :-)
You either withdraw your initial statement, and accept it is false. Or you sustain and prove its validity with explanations.
You DON'T decide you "don't need to refer to it", when you make a statement and someone challenges it. LOL. |
