Al, seems hardly the making for cancelling out one's ideology.
Let me try another angle. Remember how you equated charity with the support of government welfare programs? I too once thought that way, thinking that government should "force" more charity out of the uncharitable. That way, the poor can have their safety net, the kids can be educated, and seniors can be taken care of.
Later on, I figured out what the real root cause of these societal problems are, and why they seem to keep increasing despite the higher percentage of our taxes going towards social programs. It all has to do with the breakdown in morals across all levels, all regions, all sections of society. The increase in government spending towards welfare reflects not a growing morality in this nation, but a shrinking one. Worse yet, that increase is also exacerbating the moral depravity, for it hamstrings the truly charitable, and the bitterness among the selfish will only deepen.
So I'm not canceling out my ideology. I've just adapted my current ideals into a form that deals with the problem itself, rather than the symptoms of the problem. It's always good to treat the symptoms, but without curing the problem the treatment becomes a futile effort.
