08:07 Goldman Sachs IT Spending Survey

Goldman Sachs says their IT Spending survey indicated that IT managers expect overall IT spending to increase by 2.2% in 2004, a 70 bps increase from Dec's 1.5% forecast; however, the CIOs they surveyed had a more positive long-term growth outlook of 5.8%, a level not surpassed since Oct 2002; firm says VRTS and NSCN are gaining, while MSFT and CHKP fall out of the top tier; RHAT, IBM, and MERQ are becoming regulars in the survey's gaining
share camp, which is consistent with buzz around Linux and to some extent systems mgmt software; in particular, firm is encouraged to see MERQ continue to do well in the survey, since it highlights that the IT Governance and application performance mgmt product areas are gaining momentum at the CIO level; also, while VRTS's weak showing in their Dec survey turned out to be quite prescient ahead of its Dec qtr earnings report, they view the co's return to the share gainers column in Feb as a positive sign.
