I don't see any easy solutions to outsourcing either. Any effort from Washington to stem the tide will be clumsy and ineffective (and probably illegal under US or WTO laws). The transition in the US economy from agriculture to manufacturing to services made sense - but if our service base is undercut, I am not sure where the US economy turns next. The problem looks much graver to me since the US economy is fueled by high levels of debt and deficits. The economy is already strained by those forces; a significant chunk of the middle class could get badly squeezed in the next decade if the worst case scenarios prevail. Restoring some fiscal sanity in Washington would be a nice start. After that, the companies responsible for the most outsourcing won't notice a problem until their customer base in the US starts to weaken (assuming it does).
