TAIPEI, March 9 (Reuters) - UMC , the world's second-largest contract microchip maker, showed a 47.6 percent year-on-year surge in February sales on Tuesday as a broad recovery in tech demand keeps production lines full to bursting.
United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) posted February revenues of T$8.03 billion (US$241 million), up from T$5.44 billion in the year-ago period but off T$8.3 billion in January.
ADVERTISEMENT UMC has said its plants would be running at full capacity in the current quarter, excluding annual maintainance, as orders for chips used in wireless Internet applications and advanced mobile phones flood production lines.
Seeking a quick boost to production capacity, UMC said last month it was buying a microchip plant from sister firm Silicon Integrated Systems (SIS) for some T$10.7 billion in shares. In addition, 2004 capital spending for UMC and its subsidiaries was pumped up to US$2.12 billion from US$739 million last year.
The company announced results after close of trade in Taipei on Tuesday. UMC shares gained T$0.10, or 0.3 percent, to close at T$33.50, while the benchmark TAIEX share index advanced 1.05 percent. (US$1 = T$33.3) |
