ot: safe. 1995 i was in downtown shenyang (a large industrial city in the north) at a good hotel bar around 5:30 pm sitting around discussing business with my american and chinese consultants. a chinese man came in and wanted a woman who was sitting very near us who was with another group of people to come with him. some man in the woman's group protested and the guy pulled out a pistol and whacked him in the face and took the girl by the hair and pulled her, walking, out of the hotel. i was amazed, but the worst for me was part of the time the guy's gun was pointed toward me while he was struggling to grab the woman. my consulant guys were surprised too, but they said, "we told you up here is like the wild west." this may have been an isolated incident in china, but i have not seen a gun pulled in the usa except at a thai restaurant robbery in florida in 1997.

i agree beijing is safe.

i was driven out about 40 miles from chongqing in sichuan (out in the boonies) to a town that produced aluminum. along the way it was clear what my friends were talking about with villagers. take it for what it's worth but they warned me i did not want to be by myself along the road or in the villages as a pedestrian or driving my own car/4wd.
