re: I am 52 years old...I pay into SS to the max limit each and every year and have been for 30 years. In 10 years I will collect some of that money back. What do you suggest is the altenative for people, who unlike maybe you, have no other means of support in their retirement age? Where's the connection to moral decline you started this with?

I'm pushing 55 and believe I've been paying in since I had my first summer job at 14. It's interesting how folks can accept huge budget deficits for wars and pork, but go into a panic about SS "insolvency" (why isn't it the much softer term SS "defecits"?).
