A good example: Prudhoe Bay, the U.S.'s largest oil field, has an enormous gas cap (measured in the tens of trillions of cubic feet) that is presently essentially worthless because there is no economical way to transport gas from the North Slope to a market of any size. Gas to liquid technology, like many other 'alternative' technologies, needs one of two things to occur. Either the cost per unit must come down or oil prices must rise for an extended period of time. Methinks the former is more likely.
