Chiquita shares fall 6% as banana prices slide (CQB) By Greg Morcroft
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Chiquita Brands (CQB) , the world's largest producer and marketer of bananas, fell 6 percent Tuesday afternoon after the company said average banana prices in North America fell 6 percent in the first two months of 2004 compared to year-ago levels. Chiquita said prices were higher last year due a flood that cut supply. The company also said its average banana price, in local currency, fell 10 percent in both its core European markets and its markets central and eastern Europe during the same two month period. On a U.S. dollar basis, prices rose in markets outside the U.S. as the U.S. currency lost ground against other currencies. Volume grew in all markets except its European core markets, where it fell 3 percent.
