The Purpose for this 3G Wireless Board

We heard the Hype, we have suffered the Despair. It appears that there is reason for Cautious Optimism for G3G Mobile Wireless and the standardized technologies that hopefully will fulfill its early promise ...

* CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and 1xEV-DV
* 3GSM WCDMA UMTS and the HSDPA extension
* 3GSM UTRA TDD HCR and LCR (TD-SCDMA)

... the interim or complementary technologies that begin to fulfill the promise:

* CDMA2000 1xRTT
* GSM EDGE

... and other technologies that enrich and complement all the above:

* 802.11 WiFi
* 802.16 WiMax
* Bluetooth and 802.15 WPAN
* TBD

There are any number of fine wireless boards here on SI. This one is not intended to replace them, but to supplement them.

Mobile Wireless is an extremely competitive industry. As a consequence a great deal of emotionalism gets entangled with discussions. That is the reason for the emphasis on civility in the board header. I'm not interested in attracting Boo Birds that think 3G or a particular implementations of 3G won't fly, is inferior, is technically flawed, and will not be commercially viable. Complex technology standards take considerable time to mature, be commercialized trialed and optimized.

I'm interested in technologies that might eventually displace 3G but I'm not particularly interested in discussion of those technologies here. There are other boards for that.

I personally hope to post clippings here or post links to what I consider to be the best of the articles on 3G that I find when I meander around SI, IHub TMF, and numerous websites devoted to wireless. Others might wish to do the same, by linking a post found elsewhere with a brief explanation of why they think it is informative.

I intend to post links with comments on what I consider to be the best wireless message boards, and what I consider to be the best wireless websites.

I'll be tracking, wireless subscriber growth, handset sales, infrastructure revenue, and market share by technology, as I have for the better part of 10 years.

I'll be posting here on wireless ICs, and new handsets, and am certainly interested in what others excavate in this arena.

Some of what I post may be dated, and of historical value. We sometimes forget how we got here, and facts get a little twisted.

We all should keep in mind that Silicon Investor is first and foremost a forum for investors and that most of us are here to learn from each others research and translate that into successful investments. Discussions of companies, large medium, and small, from an investment point of view is certainly encouraged.

I'm hoping others of like mind that have an interest in 3G wireless and are optimistic about its success will join in and contribute.

I'm hoping to encourage good insightful dialogue, and by no means plan to discourage debate over comparative technology.

It's possible that I end up dialoguing with myself. Worst case I have a new file depository that chronicles the progress of 3G as it moves from trial stage to full scale commercial rollout. Maybe some day soon SI Bob will provide us with an improved search engine that will help us mine some of the wireless wisdom and knowledge that is scattered around Silicon Investor.

Disclosure:

I am a technology sales professional with at least a 6 year window to retirement. The company that employs me has some small but very limited exposure to the wireless industry, and I have no current involvement with the industry

I spent the years 1994 through the end of 1998 in the wireless industry, while the FCC PCS auctions were in progress through commercial deployment of GSM-1900, IS-95 CDMA in 800 & 1900 MHz, and IS-136 TDMA, and maintained my company's relationship with major wireless carriers geographically headquartered from Boston to Atlanta to Overland Park and Lenexa. In those years I participated actively in the pre-commercial trialing, and commercial trialing of several of the initial GSM-1900, and IS-95 CDMA 800/1900 launches. I have served on AGs and committees for GSMNA and CDG. All NDAs between my company and those carriers and committees, and my employer in that era have lapsed. Consequently I can on occasion reminisce or indulge a war story.

I have been invested in wireless since 1994 and it has treated me extraordinarily well. I currently hold QCOM, NOK, and ARMHY, and together they constitute a substantial part of my equities portfolio. I closely watch ERICY, NOK, OPWV, and IDCC. I also follow Samsung closely, and would seriously consider investing in them if they invested in the USA.

My wireless providers are Verizon Wireless (formerly BAM) for domestic use, and T-Mobile USA (once Omnipoint) for international travel.

In addition to posting here I post on various wireless or investing boards at Investors Hub (Eric) and The Motley Fool (InCards).

I have a passion for wireless, and I'm optimistic about it as an investment vehicle.

Best to all that care to participate or lurk on this board.
