Doren. IBM upgraded by maiking faster boxes running the same old code, with the year 2000 problems. Will windows 95 have a 2??? problem when they run out of years coded in one byte? starting when? after 256 years bingo, same problem. First problem with credit cards expiring after 2000 have hit Tower records I hear(rumor?, confirmation?) Others to follow.
For central control situations where there are few bits flying, as in accounting and ASCII screens(airlines) central is better than the client server. But for graphics intensive I think distributed will be better unless they get a EEPROM master software bank at each terminal, with infinite rewrite capacity(not the 10,000 cycles of modern EEPROMS) then they can be updated in slack times/nights and have a solid state hard drive in EEPROM for local GUI tasks , with only update over the net. Ever tried a solid state hard drive?, makes an Apple boot in seconds, PCs faster.
