Let's just assume at the moment that I'm too lazy to make up a chart comparing Home prices to an inflation index.

The Construction Cost index is fairly similar to a true inflation index. Because it contains a higher labor component, it actually increases a little faster than than the CPI, especially the new dishonest "inflation is really, really low - pay no attention to those rising prices" CPI.

Just imagine the same chart of home prices adjusted for construction cost.

A chart made by an industrious person would look something like this, except it would be better.
