There seems at least to exist a relatively strong personal link between Fred Hutchinson and SGEN. One of the directors has a background that is intertwined with FH and BMS (SGEN is a spin-off from the latter).

Karl Erik Hellström, M.D., Ph.D., has served as a Director of Seattle Genetics since April 1998. Dr. Hellström joined the Pacific Northwest Research Institute in October 1997. Prior to that, he was with Bristol-Myers Squibb (initially Oncogen) since 1983. Dr. Hellström served within the BMS Pharmaceutical Research Institute as Vice President of Oncology Drug Discovery and Vice President of Immunotherapeutics. In 1975, he became Director of the Tumor Immunology Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center after serving as Professor of Pathology at the University of Washington Medical School starting in 1966. Dr. Hellström received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in tumor biology/immunogenetics from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and has published over 450 scientific papers. Dr. Hellström has received many scientific awards, including the Yearly Award from the American Cancer Society, the Parke Davis Award in Experimental Pathology and the Humbold Award. In addition to Seattle Genetics, he serves as a director of GeneMax, a biotechnology company, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council Cancer Research Institute.
