Listened to some radio on the way to work this morning. Two of the nation's "shock" jocks, Howard Stern and Mancow, are prominent ratings-getters here in the Midwest with national syndicated followings, especially among the young male demographic. Mancow in particular has been very pro Bush and anti Clinton over the years. I'm not sure what Stern's past politics have been.

Both were in complete anti-Bush rant mode over the FCC's efforts to clean up shock radio. Mancow, who was as pro Bush as they come up til now, said basically, "I made a mistake. Bush is as bad as Clinton ever was, maybe worse." Then he went into his familiar pro-First Amendment, let-us-say-and-do-whatever-we-want-on-the-radio rant. He's clearly no Kerry fan, but he sees his livelihood threatened by the FCC and is lashing out.

I think this has potential implications for Bush in the fall. Not every listener of these shows is going to obediently heed the call of the shock jocks, but some may. Young males are one of Bush's core demographics. I anticipate a close election, and as we saw last time a close election can turn on the strangest things.
