More anachronistic expectations. First you assume everyone wrote things down all the time. Newsflash! They didn't have computers and word processors. Paul did in fact record the events and within a very short time period. Writing materials were very scarce and access limited to the elite who could read and write. Most of the Apostles were unlearned fishermen. The "Scribes" were the ones with opportunity to record the events but they were enemies of Christ, so surprise, surprise, they didn't. The Romans were completely uninterested in internal ecclesiastical Jewish politics so they would not have bothered.
"Instead we have volumes and volumes written about other things and other people and other events."
It's easy to throw that out as if it should have some bearing on this subject but again you have yet to demonstrate why they should have written about Jesus Christ.
Of course just writing something does not make it true. Questions like who wrote it and when are important. Also what claims are being made? Are they historical? Are they credible?
"Here is a Babylonian Scripture."
I see no claims to authorship or historical accuracy.
"Here is a Gnostic Scripture."
Right, and it was written long after Thomas was dead so it cannot be written by him. So it falls on authorship and credibility. Neither is the Gospel of Thomas set in historical context so it is cannot be subjected to the same scrutiny that Paul's writings, or the book of Acts are.
"Here is a Sumerian Scripture. Is it true because it is written?"
No authorial or historical claims that I can see.
How different are all of these from what Paul wrote and claimed!
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.......And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. |
