I think calling it a Ponzi scheme is a bit extreme,
Ponzi scheme: You give out money now, in the hopes that suckers will show up willing to give you more that you can give out, and, when their turn comes, there will still be a sufficient flow of suckers with money that you can then pay them.
Oh, and to keep the suckers coming, you make wonderful promises, say, like "COLA" and free medical and pharmaceutical coverage. You also mislead them with statements to the effect that you make a guaranteed profit from international mail coupon exchange rates or that a "trust fund" exists.
Not that such a description would possibly fit SS, of course. The difference is that with SS, your participation is not voluntary. The goose has no choice but to be plucked. |
