The average American life span when SS started was in the 50's; now it's in the 70's and rising.
Depends on when you wish to consider "started". but someone old enough to collect in 1935 could expect about another 10 years of life. Someone born then could expect about 60 years of life; hence the con game: You can't collect that early.
