Bush Targets Kerry on Trade
Rival's Policies Called 'Recipe for Economic Disaster'

CLEVELAND, March 10 -- President Bush broadened his attack Wednesday on Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) by excoriating his views on international trade, accusing the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee of favoring an "old policy of economic isolationism" that would deprive the United States of jobs and foreign markets for goods.

Appearing in Ohio, a state with a slumping economy and high stakes for the November elections, Bush issued a fresh defense of his economic strategies and insisted that altering his trade and tax policies, as Kerry envisions, would be "a recipe for economic disaster."

Bush did not mention Kerry by name but made repeated, barbed references to the trade policies of "some politicians in Washington." Bush aides said they were intended as allusions to the Democrat who seeks to replace him.

His characterization of Kerry's views on trade was the latest example of a strategy Bush has begun to employ. He is personally attempting to mold early, negative perceptions of his rival at a time when polls suggest Kerry holds a slight edge among registered voters.
