This is a very interesting topic.
I just started doing a little research, found out my GGG uncle fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War, was captured and then he had to promise never to take up arms against the Union Army again, and was then traded back to the Confederates on a 1 for 1 prisoner exchange. So he then joined Mosby's Rangers, who were not part of the Confederate Army, but still fought the Union side.
