The Land of OZ

Gary L. Wasson
March 10, 2004

Worldwide news media - radio, newspapers and television - over the last few months have been inundated with the Democratic Primary. Through this debacle of the original nine dwarfs the world has been subjugated to distasteful anti-Bush rhetoric and vile opposition to basic American ideals and standards. Now, one has emerged as the leader of the Democratic Party and the undeclared winner of the 2004 Democratic Presidential nomination. John Kerry is the man who will save our country from the terrible results of the Bush presidency. Well, if you believe that you are living in the land of OZ unaware of the potential disaster! Just for argument let’s move forward in time and look at a few results of a John Kerry victory.

The first issue would be Iraq. Mr. Kerry, as President of the United States, would march into the hollowed halls of the United Nations and instead of declaring American sovereignty; I picture him dropping down on his knees to beg forgiveness at the UN altar. After much bowing and groveling he would crawl from their presence with promises to remove our troops from Iraq and repair all the damage through payments to a UN committee setup to oversee the Iraq restoration. The result would be devastating for America and Iraq. The entire Middle East would be thrown into chaos. Iraq would become a riotous war between religious sects ripe for infiltration by terrorist operatives. Yes, our troops would come home – home to suicide bombers in Boston and Los Angeles. Terrorist attacks would immediately begin in Washington D.C. and New York. The war on terror would move from the homeland of the terrorist organizations to the streets of America and body bags would be filled with our mothers and daughters. Exactly what President Bush’s War on Terror is designed to prevent.

Second, Mr. Kerry, feeling that the federal government needs more money, would rescind all the Bush tax cuts (in lay terms this equates to a tax increase). The idea being to refill government coffers with our tax dollars. I remember the budget surplus of the Clinton years. That surplus came from Americans being over taxed and essential services not funded. Budget cuts in security programs laid the groundwork for successful terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. The result of a Kerry tax increase would bury America’s economic growth. People would stop spending and investing - forced to concentrate on paying higher taxes. Business investments would slide down a slippery slope forcing another round of job layoffs that would result in another backwards drop in Wall Street. Essentially every achievement over the past two years within our financial market would disappear overnight. And this time it wouldn’t be because of corporate greed or terrorist attacks.

Third, under the disguise of increasing jobs in America, Mr. Kerry would raise the minimum wage. On the surface this appeals to millions of workers across America but the result achieved would be far from the desired effect. If you are old enough to remember the teenage ushers in movie theaters that guided you to your seat with flashlights or the young man that bounced outside to pump the gas and check the oil you’re old enough to realize the demise of these minimum wage jobs was a direct result of raising the minimum wage. The direct cost of customer service exceeded required profit to maintain a business and employers were forced to abandon these ideals because increases in minimum wages forced hard decisions. The result - more jobs lost. And Mr. Kerry wants to take us down that road again.

So, there you have it. A Kerry presidency would result in subjection to the United Nations, disaster in our financial markets, and further job losses that were initially caused by terrorist attacks not presidential policies. And these are only three of the important issues. But I forget people in the Land of OZ don’t know what the issues are. Interestingly enough, the only reason they will give for supporting a specific candidate (eg. Mr. Kerry) is his ability to beat Bush. Interestingly enough, the only reason they will give for supporting a specific candidate (eg. Mr. Kerry) is his ability to beat Bush. These people from the Land of OZ don’t care about Iraq or foreign policy. They don’t understand economic issues or the job market. The only issue they can spout forth is “beating Bush”. It seems like this is some Godly quest like the search for the Holy Grail. They never found that either – yet.

Current policies are working. Maybe that’s what makes these “Bush haters” so uneasy. Maybe that’s why the Hollywood crowd decided to keep their mouths shut at the recent Oscars. President Bush formed an alliance where America stands with over thirty other countries supporting liberty and freedom. Who needs the United Nations when all they want to do is condemn and criticize? Any attempt at another attack on American soil has been thwarted by President Bush’s vision of Homeland Security. But the people in the Land of OZ have no vision. They stand like rock salt statues spitting forth the same old rhetoric. And Mr. Kerry just may be the wizard.
