Camera phones in steep growth curve, says study by Mobile Pipeline News Silicon Strategies 03/11/2004, 1:00 PM ET
More than quarter of all mobile phones sold this year will be camera phones and sales of the devices will increase at a rate of 55 percent a year after that, according to a study released Wednesday (March 11, 2004) by InfoTrends Research Group.
The report predicted sales of about 150 million camera phones this year, and the phones will generation 29 billion digital images worldwide, the study said. That, in turn, is leading to a significant increase in wireless data traffic, the report noted. The number of camera phones sold will increase to 656 million in 2008.
"Camera phones have boosted slowing worldwide mobile phone sales and photo messaging has contributed to an increase in data sent over the wireless networks," Jill Aldort, a senior analyst for InfoTrends, said in a statement. "In turn, these circulating digital images have already added to the number of digital prints made."
Japan is the leading market for camera phones, the report said. About half of all camera phones sold in 2004 will be sold there, according to the report. |
