no it isn't fair and I'm sure its about to change (fica tax), not because "the little guy" who is being screwed in this sitation finally got a voice, but because state governments especially California can't handle the earned income revenue collapse that has occurred these past few years due to wage deflation and the whole system is up for a massive reworking if dems are elected imho.

California recently ruled that software companies doing work offshore have to pay CA taxes on 100% of their product, not just what is produced in CA. Thats a massive shift to the tax code, something radical (almost a tariff) and this would have never flown in the Clinton era. Now that federal and state budgets are coming in way under plan its a new era in taxes.
