Comparing the peaking of world's oil production to the the earlier peak in American production does not, and was not an attempt to, "explain away the problem". It was rather an example of how we are not reaching a dead end. Oil production isn't going to stop or even fall off a cliff in 20, 30, or 50 years. I must say for all of my disagreements with him, John seems to understand this fact, or at least some of the people he quoted did.

First, no one said that oil production was going to stop or fall off a cliff. What was said is that oil production will peak some time in the future, and not that it was going to dead end.

Secondly, you inferred that when the world's production peaks, it will be no worse than when US production peaked. That makes no sense. When US production peaked, we went into the world markets and made up the shortfall. What does the world do when the world's production peaks and demand remains high? Hit the Martian oil markets? Is that why Bush wants to go to Mars? He's hoping to find oil there?

You keep suggesting that some how I am misunderstanding you. Well, I have to tell you that the above is what I got out of your comments.
