My latent interest in the governance of Afghanistan has been piqued by this brilliant Nigel Allan. He written many times on Afghanistan, sometimes providing the briefest outline other times referring in depth to the identity dynamics of the population and the exactitudes of governing the piecemeal nation. Another link I'll throw as well discusses the effect of the two decade long instability and how it has actually gone a long way in shaping the national consciousness of Afghans. For instance the Afghan war killed the irredentist sentiments among the Pathans of the north west frontier of Pakistan and consequently sharpened the distinction between an Afghani Pasthun and a Pakistani Pathan (for instance the author noted that the territorial boundary between Afghanistan and Pakistan was becoming more and more defined). Furthermore the intra-tribal distinction have died down and the once sharp emphasis of ethnic distinction is becoming somewhat unpopular. Upon my return from Switzerland (I'm going skiing from Wednesday to Sunday) I'm very intent on writing a piece on Central Asia, where I feel Pakistan's destiny lies.

Finally I've been reading this excellent paper by Heidi of Yale University on the "Semiotics of Safavid Isfahan". Isfahan is considered the supreme Iranian city, called nisf-e-jahan (half of the world), and is a testament to the sublime aesthetics of Islamic Iran. Muslim revivalists organisations should try to restore the elegance and grandeur of medieval Islam rather than the austerity of the desert faith.
