I saw Madama Butterfly two nights in a row, since my high school students were encouraged to go for extra credit, I had to be at the performance to make sure they were there. I'd forgotten how beautiful it is- and I don't think I have ever seen the 14 minute interlude as she waits for Pinkerton (that horrible horrible man). Rambi told me about the interlude- and she told me many directors cut it- and when I have seen Butterfly before it HAS been cut, and in the video version I own it has been cut- but it was marvelous to see it. It elevates the tension and sadness so greatly- as nothing else could do, imo.

I had forgotten Butterfly was only 15- and when that was translated on the subtitles a little gasp went up from my students- and then they were hooked :-) Most of them stayed for the complete performance- even though I only ask them to attend the first hour. Tosca was much more difficult for them- they loved Butterfly.
