I don't think Bush's political team really has a grasp how middle America is seeing the world now. The Bush "keep it simple" philosophy is supposed to work - tell people you saved them from baddies and your tax cuts will save the economy (while your opponent loves terrorists and taxes) and you get re-elected.

It worked for Reagan with Soviets and taxes.

But Bush can't find any simple-Simon buttons to push that work outside his loyal base. I don't see him offering anything to disaffected swing voters, just empty promises, slogans and a cultural war.

The undecided middle doesn't seem very interested - they are more focused on jobs, healthcare, deficits, outsourcing, where are the WMDs, etc. That's where Kerry will focus, no doubt.
