15 teams qualify for Mojave Desert robot race, though many didn't make it trough trials
On Saturday, DARPA will award $1 million to the first team whose vehicle can cover a rugged desert course of at least 150 miles from Barstow, Calif., to Primm, Nev., in less than 10 hours.
Qualifiers that finished the course were teams from Carnegie Mellon University; California Institute of Technology; Virginia Tech; Digital Auto Drive of Morgan Hill, Calif.; SciAutonics LLC and Elbit Systems Inc.; Oshkosh Truck Corp., Oshkosh, Wis.; and Axion Racing, Westlake Village, Calif.
Contestants that didn't finish the practice course but still qualified are another team from SciAutonics; Palos Verdes High School, Palos Verdes, Calif.; an entry by Anthony Levandowski, Berkeley, Calif.; one from Richard Mason, Santa Monica, Calif.; Terra Engineering, Gardena, Calif.; University of Florida and Autonomous Solutions Inc.; University of Louisiana at Lafayette; and Ensco Inc. of Falls Church, Va. sfgate.com |
