Spain Had Preliminary Clues Attacks Were Islamist, Cinco Says March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes knew of indications an Islamist group might be responsible for Thursday's bombings in Madrid when he said all clues pointed to Basque terrorist group ETA, Cinco Dias reported, without saying where it got the information.
An unidentified police official, uncomfortable with government insistence that ETA was to blame, informed the opposition Socialist Party of clues pointing to an Islamic group, the newspaper said. They included a van containing explosives, detonators and a tape with verses from the Koran in Arabic, Cinco Dias said.
ETA denied carrying out the train bombings in an anonymous telephone call yesterday to the Basque newspaper Gara, Cinco Dias said on its Web site. ETA has used Gara in the past to make announcements.
Government officials including Acebes were still saying yesterday that ETA is their main suspect, though they're following up on other possibilities.
Investigators found a sports bag at the scene of some of the explosions which contained an unexploded bomb and a mobile phone that was to be used to detonate it. The phone was configured in Arabic, Cinco Dias said.
