I don't disagree but feel that it's time to wake people up and the people may just be ready. Don't forget that only about 1/2 even bother to register and vote. (Actually, I think's it's even less than 1/2 of potential eligible who actually vote, but I may be wrong.)
This means that every election is up for grabs. That's why you can see the phenomenon of e.g. a Ross Perot or Howard Dean, someone who catches the eye, mobilizes. (Of course, both self-destructed for exposing too much of their own idiosyncracies.)
Unfortunately, the tried and true seem to follow the pattern about which you post, taking the safe route, promising the moon, declaring that the other side is just a bunch of crooks and liars.
I'd like to see someone really take the chance and put together comprehensive programs, not as a position paper on a website, but part of the real debate, the commercials, etc. It only takes a paragraph or three. I did it in my prior post and that took about 45 seconds to write and maybe 10 seconds to read. People will stay awake for that length of time.
But it is a gamble as Dean found out. (I'm not sure Perot ever realized what hit him.) |
