Early problems end $1 million robot race across Mojave Desert

ANDREW BRIDGES, AP Science Writer

(03-13) 14:29 PST BARSTOW, Calif. (AP) --

A 150-mile robot race across the Mojave Desert ended Saturday just hours after it started, leaving a $1 million prize unclaimed after technical glitches, barbed-wire fences and rugged terrain foiled all 15 driverless vehicles.

One of the early favorites, a military Humvee converted by Carnegie Mellon University students to run autonomously, managed to travel 7.4 miles before veering off course and snapping an axle during the Pentagon-sponsored race.
