He didn't say he had thrown his medals. You're twistng his words. If he had said "I just threw my medals" then you'd have a point, but "we" means the whole crowd, and obviously not every one of them thre all their medals. JK also threw some medals for some handicapped vets who couldn't make it and asked him to throw theirs.

Also, JK was clearly conficted about how he wanted to protest the war. This was very emotional powerful stuff. Shortly after this he left the VVAW as he felt their methods were too radical. He wanted to work within the system and do it in a more conservative fashion. The leader of VVAW reports that John was "more conservative" than the rest of them. So he left to work within the system.

The stories he told about Nam were shocking, but true. By now we have all heard them. They helped wake up the nation.

Also, JK never worked with Jane Fonda. He spoke at one rally she spoke at but that's about it. She states they hardly kenw each other and probably never even shook hands and talked. JK did not support her Hanoi trip at all. JK was always careful not to become a radical. First of all it wasn't the kind of man he was. Second, he wanted to run for congress. He was watching his P's and Q's so as not to alienate moderates. But he didn't mind directly challenging the Nixonites. Nixon ordered JK "destroyed" as you can read in the Watergate tapes. He or Colson also called Jk a "baby-killer".
