Dave, Previous to learning my father's family lived in England as early as 1720, I did some genealogical digging at Welsh websites looking for familiar names. Most common male names for previous generations in my family were Thomas, John, George, Benjamin, Reuben & I thought of them as Welsh names. There was some migration of course between England & Wales, especially for coal miners through the centuries, as the tradition was to relocate to wherever work was available in either country.
Did you know David is the 2nd most popular Welsh male name, John is 1st, Thomas 3rd. Your question made me curious about Welsh naming patterns. Found this:
