Videotape Purportedly Claims al-Qaida Responsible for Madrid Attack VOA News 14 Mar 2004, 00:29 UTC The Spanish government says it has a videotape in which al-Qaida claims responsibility for Thursday's train bombings in Madrid. AP Angel Acebes (File photo) Interior Minister Angel Acebes, in an early morning news conference Sunday, said the authenticity of the tape could not be immediately confirmed. He said the man identified himself as a military spokesman for the terrorist group. Mr. Acebes told reporters the man, speaking in Arabic, said al-Qaida bombed the Madrid trains in retaliation for Spain's cooperation with the United States. The man, dressed in Arab clothing, threatened further attacks. Two hundred people were killed and more than 1,400 injured in last week's bombings at the height of Madrid's morning rush hour. Meanwhile, Spanish authorities Saturday arrested five people in connection with the attacks. Mr. Acebes said three Moroccans and two Indians were taken into custody. Two Spaniards of Hindu origin are also being questioned, but are not expected to be charged. voanews.com
