Bombing a French oil tanker off Yemen and a dance club in Bali were utterly stupid acts. But they only seem to understand "infidel crusaders and joooooos". Couple those attacks with 9/11, 3/11, the USS Cole, the Kenyan Embassy, the Tanzanian Embassy, Khobar Towers and other aq attacks...and the message is clear. aq is demonstrating an ability to kill Jews and Christians in large numbers anywhere on earth. The stated goal in their jihad proclamation is to kill all Jews, kill all Christians and kill all Americans. I believe all of these attacks are viewed by aq as a step towards accomplishing that goal. The killing is most important to them. The sidebar - the fear factor - is less important, but if it divides us politically, if it weakens our resolve, if it diminishes our willingness to fight, it too will be very useful to aq. If there is stupidity in all of this...It is the thinking that appeasement and police are going to be able to manage the problem. Gut-wrenching fear can also be a wonderful thing. America felt it after 9/11. The Spaniards feel it today. Men fight hardest to protect their own loved ones. That is why we have near total agreement about attacking Afghanistan after 9/11. I do not believe the attacks in Spain will diminish their willingness to fight and strike back one iota. With near 2,000 casualties, many more Spanish citizens will know someone who was injured or know someone who knows someone. I expect this to unify Spaniards in their fight against terror. The Spanish people have one wonderful advantage over the US. They do not have to endure the John Kerry fog machine. uw
