The Socialists winning is the worst possible news. They will pull the Spanish troops out of Iraq, and reverse their policy with us.

Realistically, I don't think that Spain's support is decisive, but this does show that any remaining supporters of America will fall like dominos at the slightest well timed push.

The fundamental problem not to lose sight of is that we are on the Saudi oil teat, with our and the world's economy dependent on the continuing supply of oil. Whether populations in this or that country live under a barbaric dictatorship has been and will continue to be besides the point. Short term stability and business as usual is all that ever counts. This more than any other factor is why so many countries are diplomatically opposed to the US overthrowing Saddam. The public may be on the bandwagon of anti-American hatred fueled by the invidious rhetoric of demagogues, but the "State Departments", they know where their interests lie - la stabilité par dessus tout.

Frankly, if Islamist extremists triumphed in expelling the West and we were not dependent on all that oil, who would care ?

Am I possibly wrong about this ?
