Fascinating stuff about Sweden. If Bush hadn't blown so much money on Iraq, and other foolish things, we could have a civilian jobs program- our high school has a fabulous auditorium that was built as a WPA project. When I attended the opera last week the director gave a lecture on the company, and part of that lecture included information on how great our auditorium was, and why it was such a fabulous place. Here's a structure built during the depression that is still in heavy use today.

There are libertarians out there who fear the heavy hand of government, I'm not sure I like the heavy hand myself. But government can do so much good, and when I look at WPA murals, or buildings, or structures in our national parks where there is now so much need of refurbishment, I think we miss the useful hand of government- the sensible, meat and potatoes hand of government. Of course to have a sensible government we need some sensible leaders IN government- who knows, maybe that will happen.
