That cost differential is called the "sunshine tax". Californians know they get the short end of the stick but continue to live here.

We have too many people here now, the way it is. if we incentivize the tax system to make it more "fair" for CA, the whole country would empty out to the west coast.

For the record, COL here isn't that much different than in Detroit, its the price of getting into a HOUSE that causes all the uproar. you have to remember that housing is a leveraged investment, just a bit more leveraged in CA than elsewhere.
