Liberal can mean everything from socialist to libertarian, but it is most often used in America today to describe ideas that are closer to socialist then they are to minarchist.

I think that's how conservatives perceive American liberals. However, that's not how I see myself. One example.......I have over and over encouraged fiscal restraint in gov't spending. That means that you don't spend more than your revenues. In fact, anything extra is put in a slush fund for 'rainy' days.

WA state is considered a liberal state and spends a good percentage of its revenues on social programs like Running Start which pays hi school students for any college courses they take. Obviously, its intended to encourage hi schools to seek higher education and to give them a head start.

However, when revenues fell off because of the recession, the state quickly reacted and made sure expenses were cut to match revenue shortfalls. That's exactly the kind of fiscal responsibility I want to see in the gov't entity that oversees where I live.

So I considered myself a liberal but not by your definition but by the tradition definition of a liberal.
