The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) recently revealed shipment results of mobile phones in Japan, including mobile or in-car phones and PHS phones, for January 2004.

The total number of shipments was 2,983,000, decreasing for the first time in 15 months. Also, it has been 23 months since the total unit shipments fell below 3 million in February 2002.

The breakdown of the shipment results shows 2,935,000 units for mobile or in-car phones, drastically decreasing by 1,740,000 units from the December 2003 result of 4,675,000 units.

Shipments of PHS were 48,000 units, continuously decreasing since November, 2003.

According to JEITA, the slow shipments in January were due to the fact that, "the sales of second-generation mobile phones did not go well, mainly because of a negative reaction to the year-end business competition." <<

Mobile phone shipments in Japan from January through December 2003 reached 52,198,000 units, for an increase of 27% over the previous year, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).

Mobile phones include cellular phones, in-car phones and PHS products.

For the first time in three years, the annual result turned to positive growth over the previous year. The total comprised 50,784,000 units of cellular phones and car phones, and 1,414,000 units of PHS handsets.

In its analysis, JEITA said that the increase in shipments is attributable to the continuously strong sales of mobile phones with built-in cameras and high replacement demand for third-generation mobile phones. The single month of December 2003 showed a high growth of 18.9% over the previous year, resulting in 4,712,000 units. This momentum is expected to continue for a while. <<
