Telecom Italia Deploys Westell xDSL Equipment

Torino 2000 Project Selects FlexCap2 RADSL to Enable Broadband Telecommunications Network

AURORA, Ill., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Westell (Nasdaq:WSTL) announced today that Telecom Italia and the Italian municipality of Turin are deploying Westell's FlexCap2(TM) Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RADSL) technology in their broadband telecommunications network. This deployment, named ``Torino 2000,'' will provide innovative information services to residences and businesses in the city.

Westell has been selected as the provider of ADSL equipment for Torino 2000, a three-year program which will provide Internet access, videoconferencing, and other interactive services to residential users, professional offices and small and medium-sized businesses. Multi-site intra- company networks and a Local Area Network (LAN) for the Turin Municipality are also being implemented. Networks in hospitals will enable teleradiology, medical teleconsulting, and diagnostic imaging. Virtual universities will provide access to courses and educational databases, and local cultural and tourism facilities will be able to offer tourist information, virtual museums and real estate information through high-speed information services. (Additional information can be found at the Torino 2000 Web site (www.to2000.net)).

``We are pleased to have a significant role in the Torino 2000 Project,'' said Richard Carter, Business Development Director of Westell Europe. ``Deployments such as these demonstrate the potential for broadband deployment in the European community, offering high-speed Internet access to consumers and businesses alike.''

Westell's FlexCap2 RADSL equipment has been deployed in 15 Telecommunications central offices in Turin with a number of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switches and high-end routers to offer interactive multimedia services on Internet Protocol (IP). Future plans for the equipment include the addition of system management capabilities.

The FlexCap2 RADSL System gives network service providers the ability to offer high-speed data services for Internet access, remote LAN extension, and telecommuting over their existing copper access network. FlexCap2 operates at rates from 640 kbps to 2.24 Mbps downstream and 272 kbps to 1.088 Mbps upstream and features rate adaptive capabilities that adjust speed based on copper line length and quality.

Westell is the leading worldwide innovator and manufacturer of xDSL systems and telecommunications access products, with corporate headquarters in Aurora, Illinois. Westell's xDSL products are currently being deployed or in trial by more than 100 customers in over 30 countries worldwide, including Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, Bell Canada, BritishTelecommunications, GTE, MCI, NYNEX and US West, and leading Internet service providers.
