As usual with Dean, it's not what he said, but the way that he said it.

It's a fact that the Madrid bombing was in large part retaliation for Spanish involvement in the War on Terror - that's what the group taking responsibility for the attack stated was the reason.

I have no idea whether the Bush administration twisted the arm of the Spanish government to get them involved in Iraq, or whether it was a voluntary action, but if there were no war in Iraq, then retaliation wouldn't be a motive. So Dean is right, just as a wife abuser is right when he says that if only the wife hadn't done something to set him off, he wouldn't have beaten her. But the wife abuser thinks setting him off is justification for a beating, and Dean apparently thinks Spain's involvement in Iraq is justification for killing civilians using bombs.

It's pretty shitty to blame the victims before they are even buried, but that's Dean for you. Reminds me of the Europeans who, after 9/11, said it was our fault for not signing the Kyoto treaty and all that.

Hopefully, Dean will quickly assume his proper place as a very small footnote in the history of the country.
