That surprises me a bit. I understood that he had the most liberal voting record in the Senate -- even more liberal than Kennedy, which is hard to contemplate.

I forget where that came from. If nobody else here knows offhand, I'll try to look it up. As I recall, it didn't come from right wing propagandists (of which there are some, to be sure), but was from one of the liberal organizations that rates voting records.

Not to say that he hasn't turned centrist for election purposes. But one wonders whether that's who he truly is.
