I resisted that notion most of my life, but now reality has come down to strike me. I love books. I love the way they look, the way they feel, the knowledge they hold, the wisdom they contain, effort that went into writing them, the comfort they bring. I love browsing unknown books, and almost always find one I want.

I hate getting rid of books. I bet I haven't gotten rid of more than a few dozen in my entire life, because I only acquire ones I like. But there's no space. My back hurts when I pick them up, and I spent a dollar a pound getting them down here from Alaska. If we move again, I don't want to spend another dollar.

But it hurts. It's like getting rid of puppies or children.
