Ted, You can't crush their will.

You can crush their will by starving them out and giving their supporters something else to believe in. On that point you and I would agree.

You can't crush the will of passionate people who firmly believe in their cause.........the Hamas, the French peasant, the northern Irish, the American colonist. Human history is littered with passionate people who would fight to the death for their cause. They may be evil; they may be terrorists; their cause may be questionable. But what's the point of ignoring history?

I can anticipate your next question already: Why are we focused on Iraq and not other nations like Saudi Arabia? Because perhaps with a model of democracy and stability in Iraq, Saudis will also come around and demand the same thing in their land. That's what the neoconservative experiment is all about.

You want to get to regional democracy and stability by starting a horrific war that could go on for years in one of the countries of that region? Does that make sense to you? If you beat a dog into submission, do you really think you will have a loving animal on your hands? If the region is ready for democracy, it will happen without our input.

Besides, who died and made us king of the world?

I know you don't like the experiment, but if you have any better ideas, now's the time to bring them up.

By helping the region.........by using the carrot and stick approach.......if you do x, we will do y......incremental steps....done over time. You don't build a peace and stability by doing shock and awe. Those things come from building up the region. There are countries in the ME much closer to democracy than Iraq was or is. If we help them economically, they might get there faster.
