China is not the new Japan

"Once America’s election knockabout is over, China will prove a harder nut to crack than Japan, its predecessor in the doghouses of Europe and America. The trouble is that China, unlike Japan in its 1980s heyday, no longer runs a huge trade surplus overall. Surpluses in trade with the West in manufactures are matched by huge imports of materials, investment goods and luxury consumer goods.
