Mediocre is average- it is a fact most people are average- hence the value of statistics. I can point to degrees, and accomplishments and prove I am not average in my field, but a great swathe of our population is going to be mediocre, and some are even going to be below average. To say this is not insulting, it is merely statistical fact. I do not see how you can say what is inherently illogical. If I were average, it would not be logical for me to be angry about it. I suppose I could have an emotional fit about it, but where would that get me? I'm mediocre in math- so I do not concentrate in the area of mathematics. This only makes sense to me. I would not be insulted if you said it, just as I am not insulted to say it of myself. It is what it is.

You are surprised I and my husband are not Bush supporters? And you think this follows logically? This is too too sad.

It is too bad that people lose their jobs. It is too bad there is no easy remedy. And it is too bad you think that anyone who disagrees with you on one issue would want to vote for Bush. This says to me there is very little hope for rational discussion- not even between people who basically agree on most issues, as we do. Let one issue fall between them, upon which they cannot agree, and one party (or both, in some cases, but not this one) rushes to immediately cast the other as the "enemy."

I would not change my mind about this if I were affected. I would not change my mind about this if my husband were affected. The only thing that could change my mind is if it were rational to be protectionist. When that miraculous event occurs I will happily champion protectionism, but as long as it looks irrational, and looks to be in our long term worst interest, I cannot favor it- not even if people with whom I disagree on other issues favor it also. Logic is like that. It makes little room for emotional allegiances.
