Spain's "appeasement" is announcing that the Spanish troops in Iraq will be withdrawn forthwith. It appears calculated to ward off any more bombings in Spain.

How can that be when one of the planks in Zapatero's platform, announced before the bombs went off, was that he would bring Spanish troops home if elected? Any similar statement after the bombings is simply consistent with what he said before.

Think about the point this way: If Z. said he'd bring the troops back before the bombings and there is some direct logical connection between such a statement and the bombs, wouldn't he wish to reverse his position in order to preclude more bombs from going off? Would that make him an appeaser? Of course not. Only if his position somehow changed as a result of the bombs can he be tagged as an appeaser. It didn't, ergo, he is not an appeaser.

There is no appeasement in announcing that he would do as PM what he expressed he would do before they exploded.

Z. can also be tagged as an appeaser if he made statements to the effect that he would bring Spanish troops back home specifically in order to prevent AQ attacks. Under those circumstances, he may validly be called an appeaser, albeit not a very good one in view of the attacks. So far, I haven't seen any such statements.

The "forthwith" stuff is balderdash. Zapatero doesn't become PM for some time.
