Actually the Shiites are maybe 60% which does not constitute a vast majority. That's only a guess because (LOL) if there were an acceptable census (there was) Bremmer would have to concede that democratic elections are possible.

The problem: this is a once in a century opportunity for EVERYONE to grab what they want and feel they deserve (ok, what they want): oil, land, power, control, attention.

The Kurds wants autonomy and their oil fields and freedom from Turkish meddling. At best they'll accept federalism but how difficult would that be?

The Sunnis want their Saddam-based power back without Saddam.

The Shiites want to run everything as they have a slight demographic advantage for the time being.

======

It's very sad, while the US and the rest of the world are scratching their heads (from Nightline last night), the fundamentalists are coming in. Women, even in Baghdad, are frightened. They're now wearing headscarves but are still (and this is an American news woman) being yelled at by men and even little boys. Shades of the Taliban!

The small minority of Christians in Iraq (maybe 1 million) are really frightened. They're less free from a religious standpoint than they were under Saddam which barely makes sense.

Wouldn't it be ironic if a right-wing evangelical (ok he's not really but he panders) crusading Christian President topples a secular despot letting fundamentalist radical Islam take over a country with the world's second largest oil reserves?

Huh?
