Re: With this in mind it seems one is largely wasting one's time if one believes that by raving on SI one will induce many to become "enlightened".

This is a conclusion I'm reaching not only about SI, but about my local community as well. I've proposed organizing "teach-ins" and seminars of such varied topics as the Iraq War, the Project for A New American Century and the real debate we ought to be having about the transformation of America from a republic to the evil empire. Even in the "progressive" community here, there is a disinclination to be involved in these questions.

I recently attended something called Conversation Cafe, which is being organized across the North American continent via word-of-mouth and an Internet web site. Our local organizer is a perky human rights activist. At the last session, about three weeks ago, I broached the idea that I'd like to organize a teach-in for March 20th, the anniversary of Bush's naked aggression into Iraq. Not one person out of 23 present had any interest in helping me organize such an event. In fact the host told me she's burned out on 'big politics' and would rather organize drag queen shows than talk about the big picture.

With a progressive community this dissipated, self-indulgent and defeated, I'm considering joining with Garrison Keillor, the host of NPR's Prarie Home Companion who quips that "We're all Republicans Now!"

Which was just a sly way for me to introduce the Pretty Good Joke machine:

A guy could get rich by submitting jokes for the April 16th show, you know......
