One of the women (maybe there was only one and I believe she was the one who was subsequently murdered) on the IGC had to call her father to ask whether she was Sunni or Shiite. I can't remember which one she turned out to be.

I don't know how big a deal it really is except when you're looking to gain power. Perhaps some feel it more than others. At any rate, it certainly looks like the fundamentalists are filling the local and national power vacuums regardless of what we're doing.

150,000 of us there and 25 million Iraqis? They will do what they want to do and, in the end, who the heck knows if it will be worthwhile from them and us or not?

They're just people who are faced with a very unique dilemma, their government just disappeared and there's a mad scramble to make a new one which will best fit their personal requirements. We'd do the same thing here as well if faced with a similar problem, er, opportunity.
